EXCL: Screen Gems Moving Ahead with Underworld 4

ShockTillYouDrop.com has learned exclusively that Sony's Screen Gems is moving ahead with a fourth film in the "Underworld" franchise and is targeting a January 2011 release. The movie will be shot in 3-D.

We've received no word yet if Underworld: Rise of the Lycans stars Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy and Rhona Mitra, or former franchise stars Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman will return for the next film.

Back in February, we reported that the studio was pleased with the performance of the prequel that opened on January 23. The film was made for just $35 million and earned $91.1 million worldwide, not counting DVD and Blu-ray sales.

I haven't watched Rise of the Lycans, even though I heard it was great, because it didn't have the original Selena and no Michael .. If this one doesn't have it, I won't watch it either..

That is why I love the original! I have seen all the movies and Rise of the Lycans is almost as good (not quite) as the first one. That is my opinion! For what I understand, Kate Beckinsale is tired of playing a vampire and might not do any more Underworld. I think that it is too soon to speculate.

I had to complete the series so that's why I watched Rise of the Lycan's but I wasn't sure about it because of the lack of Selene and Michael. It was pretty good, I think it gives a new outlook on lycans. I'm excited to hear about Underworld 4. They've been talking about it for a while so I'm glad that it looks like it might come true. I heard at one point Kate didn't want to do the series anymore but I think with Rise of the Lycan's doing so well she's changed her mind.

I'm in with reservations... I saw the second movie again this weekend and found it just as gripping as I did the first time I saw it. Although I agree with Candy that the chemistry (and there is massive amounts of it) between the characters of Selene and Michael is a big part of the appeal! If Kate chooses not to return to the role of Selene and it is recast (a la Twilight/Victoria) I may not be in any rush to see Underworld 4.

I was not crazy about the second Underworld, but Rise of the Lycans was a pleasant surprise. I really hope that Kate decides to return for Underwold 4.

It would be so awesome if Kate and Scott would return. As much as I loved Rise of the Lycans, it sucked b/c I know Sonya had to die. I'd like to get out of the prequels and get back to the story in the present day. Plus I would like to see me some Scott Speedman...LOL!

Yes, Scott Speedman is a huge plus. I can't wait to see or even hear more about Underworld 4. Now that Selene is this Uber Vamp and can walk in daylight with Michael this only means it's going to be a fun adventure.

Both Kate and Scott NEED to come back for the 4th. Michael Sheen would have to get in there as well. Too bad Bill Nighy's character died . . I actually liked his character . . even though he was the bad guy. I think he did an awesome job with the part.

Kate Beckinsale to return as underworld vampire

WASHINGTON - Kate Beckinsale will reportedly return as a vampire in the fourth “Underworld” movie.

The actress, who has previously starred in the first two films in the series, was said to have pulled out of the third instalment.

But according to movie news website BloodyDisgusting.com, the star will be back for the fourth movie that will be in 3-D, reports Contactmusic.

Underworld 4: 3-D, presently in development, is expected to hit the theatres in January 2011.

The Underworld series is a series of Romeo and Juliet-like vampire/werewolf films directed by Len Wiseman and Patrick Tatopoulos.

Kate Beckinsale talks UNDERWORLD 4

Just an hour ago I participated in a press conference with part of the cast of “Whiteout” and producer Joel Silver. Since Kate Beckinsale is the lead in “Whiteout”, it was the perfect time to ask Kate about returning to the popular “Underworld” franchise. But according to Kate, reports of her returning for a 4th film are premature as she told us, “as far as I’m concerned it’s just a rumor.” More after the jump:


Here’s what Kate told us about “Underworld”:

Will you ever do another Underworld?
Kate: I don’t know anything about a 4th Underworld. I don’t know anything about that at this point.

You know nothing about another Underworld?
Kate: I know they have…it was always conceived as a trilogy, which I was never going to be in the third one. I think if they came up with an amazing script I wouldn’t be adverse to it. But it’s not planned or anything.

There have been reports you signed to a new Underworld trilogy.
Kate: God, three whole more!

Yeah.
Kate: I don’t think my daughter needs to see my bottom in rubber for another ten years. But I don’t know, I’ve heard they’re talking about a 4th one, but I don’t know if that’s officially happening or it’s that a rumor. As far as I’m concerned it’s just a rumor.

So for now, nothing’s happening. But with how much money the franchise has made, it definitely wouldn’t surprise me to see Kate wear the rubber suit again. More as we get it.

Wow she doesn't seem overly enthusiastic. I hope she changes her mind.

Thy are reporting that Kate Beckinsale will in fact be starring in Underworld 3D, assuming she can't work her way out of the deal. What do I mean? Well, sources tell us she's trying to find a way out of the film -- or at least have a smaller role in order to "pass the torch" to one of her kindred (yes, she has not one, but two daughters at this point). With a plan to release the film in theaters on January 21, 2011, production needs to commence soon. Who will helm? The Variety article states Len Wiseman will once again go behind the camera.
