I have just received this older magazine (Celebs Magazine- issue October 4, 2009) showing Alex and Sophia in Moonlight. It is interesting to also see James Masters from Buffy fame, now also in Hawaii Five-O.

THE SECRET JOY OF A MAN

Alex, extrovert, sexy, and totally single, is breaking out just now. After the audition he had from a super diva. Here he talks about his American dream, but before he discusses philosophy and assisted procreation. And he reveals his strongest side: the tenderness for his child, who lives with him.

“It’s true, I have a son, Saxon, who’s already 12. I am raising him alone and I had to grow up fast too” And you are ... “25, can’t you see? No, if only! I am 33 and my son is the most beautiful thing that ever happened in my life” The second (maybe) is passing the Lopez-test, in the sense that Jennifer auditioned him in person before enrolling him as her partner in the romantic comedy The Bak-up Plan, which touches a sensible issue such as assisted procreation. And here we are: Alex O’Loughlin, who welcomes us for an exclusive interview, is now the new top of the range guy of the numerous group of superstars arriving from Australia, a group ranging from Heath Ledger to Sam Worthington. But now he doesn’t feel like talking about sets and future successes.

What did you say about being a father and alone?

“I usually don’t talk about this, I don’t want to expose my child, but I can say that a child is the only thing that you love more than yourself and that this feeling brings you to move in a different place. It gives you unique sensations, unparalleled. No sex, no work, no money can do so much... The moments you share with your son, just you and him, make you get to a level of understanding that allows you to put everything into perspective”.

Did you have to sacrifice much?

“No, and the Australian way of life helped me: down there you have to grow up quicky, soon. At junior high school you first learn to drink and get in a fight, and if you don’t learn, you don’t have a nice life. Sensibility, when you are lucky, passes through the blows you get”. Your movie asks this question: does it make sense to have a kid without a partner? “Assisted insemination is a strongly contemporary issue and it is difficult to assume a definite position. But first of all, I wish to say that there are a lot of parents whose kids should be taken away from them, even if they are in a couple. Before having them (kids) you should be required to pass a test to see if you are apt”.

So?

“If a woman alone, who hasn’t found the right man wants children and is able to provide for them, she should have the right to have them, and I think all the rest comes naturally. A woman, besides, has an inborn motherly sense. I have several friends who conceived kids with this technique and they are happy, both they and their children, so I don’t see a good reason to be against. Sure, every case must be analysed in itself.”

And what about a man?

“I can’t see why not, even if it is obvious that it’s a bit different. I think a woman is more inclined. Well, we do not breastfeed and are those who historically went to hunt and let the care of kids to women!” (he laughs)

Does your son ever ask you to find a wife?

“My son? No, but the other day we were talking. He’s now in the phase in which he begins to look at girls in a different way and so I asked him if there was one he liked best. He looked at me and said: “What about you, dad? Get a girlfriend...” He wants to see me happy and I think he has been seeing me as a lone man for a long time. Maybe he misses a female presence and the energy that immediately derives from that. I can give him a lot, but not what a woman could give him”.

So what?

“I am certain I will get married that one day and when I do it will suit Saxton too, because that will give him more balance”.

In the meantime, you’ve got your first leading part: have you already signed many autographs?

“No. But in Australia nobody stops Mel Gibson or Nicole Kidman in the street: only in the States I get blocked sometimes. Here people are more obsessed with star system.”

How did the famous audition with Lopez go?

“She contacted me, I flew to New York and met her and Marc, her husband, and their kids, and I’d say that we were on the same wavelength. They are very normal people, like you and me, they just live in extreme, crazy circumstances. They are normal people who must deal with an enormous fame. I don’t know if I would be able to, but if it happens, I’ll try to adapt... All in all, I’m a tough guy, I’m Australian”.

THE AUSTRALIAN FACTOR

Alex is only the last one of a series of Australian actors who are giving lessons to the American stars. He gives this explanation: “Australia is a peculiar country, hard, where people find pride in their own work, where there is a rooted professional ethic, and where you have to study to act and work your way up in theater. The success of Australians in Hollywood doesn’t derive only from nationality, but also from how much we are obliged to study. Take Russel Crowe: he’s the toughest and most prepared guy that I know!”

Where we will see Alex, doctor in fiction While the movie with Lopez is going to be released, O’Loughlin is going to become a fixed presence on tv (on Sky, in april): with Three Rivers, a CBS show arrived at its third season (NTR: The interviewer is mistaken, of course) in the US. Set in Pittsburgh, it revolves around the theme of organ transplantation. Alex took his revenge: he was rejected for the role of Bill, the vampire of True Blood.

Soon on TV: Alex O’Loughlin in the show Three Rivers In theaters: with Jennifer Lopez in the Back-up Plan In DVD: in Whiteout, filmed in 2009 (another mistake) Pics captions: Alex O’Loughlin - Born in Canberra in 1976, is an actor and a film producer Alex has 7 tattoos and is single, after a story (never confirmed) with actress Holly Valance New faces – The Australian actor Alex O’Loughlin, chosen by Jennifer Lopez, reveals himself to Glamour.

Bianca, thank you so much for tha article about Alex and his son....makes him even MORE remarkable in my eyes. It is amazing that he is able to protect him from the paps and that more pictures have not leaked.

"he has been seeing me as a lone man for a long time." -- I can think of a few of us that would love to help him remedy THAT situation - LOL!!!!

On January 21st, Allison Winn Scotch interviewed Alex O’Loughlin by phone for “American Way”, which is the in-flight magazine of American Airlines. Although not lengthy, the article covers a myriad of topics, including The Back-up Plan, working with Jennifer Lopez (find out what he calls her!), the comedies he likes, Twitter, Facebook and his own back-up plan… or the lack of one.

Getting Back Up

by Allison Winn Scotch

A couple of canceled TV series aren’t slowing Aussie expat Alex O’Loughlin down. He stars in this month’s The Backup Plan, and soon, he’ll return to the small screen in a familiar role.

STEP ASIDE, HUGH JACKMAN: AUSTRALIA’S HOTTEST NEW EXPORT HAS ARRIVED. In truth, Alex O’Loughlin, 33, landed on U.S. shores a few years back, when he headlined the popular, albeit short-lived, television series Moonlight. More recently, he starred in the medical drama Three Rivers, which suffered a similar gone-too-soon fate. But this month, he’s poised to break out opposite Jennifer Lopez in The Back-up Plan, a crowd-pleaser about a woman who takes pregnancy into her own hands only to then meet the love of her life. Next up, he’ll return to TV as Detective Steve McGarrett in the much-hyped reboot of Hawaii Five-O. We chatted with the Aussie about his career, his fans and what it’s really like working with the woman formerly known as J.Lo.
