HAWAII FIVE-O (CBS) Emmy-nominee Jean Smart ("24") has joined the cast of the drama pilot, about an elite branch of the Hawaii State Police headed by Steve McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin). She'll play Governor Pat Jameson, who taps McGarrett to form "a federalized unit empowered by the Patriot act, with full blanket authority to hunt big game and get 'em the hell off [her] island." Her character is further detailed as "a rather beautiful woman in her early 40's; local Hawaiian with a Washingtonian's backbone, she's a unique mix of brilliance, grace, and compassion." Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park, Scott Caan and Taryn Manning co-star in the CBS Television Studios-based hour, which comes from director Len Wisman and co-creators Alex Kurtzman, Peter Lenkov and Roberto Orci.

TV Q&A with Rob Owen
Friday, March 12, 2010
This week's TV Q&A responds to questions about Alex O'Loughlin, ABC's "FlashForward" and a new WQEX digital sub-channel.
As always, thanks for reading, and keep the questions coming.
-- Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV editor
Q: I really miss "Three Rivers." Do you think CBS will get another series for Alex O'Loughlin to star in stay on?
-- Viewer question via Keep or Cancel poll comments
Rob: They're sure trying. CBS, more than any other network, believes in supporting actors they believe can be stars until they find just the right vehicle. They did it with Simon Baker ("The Guardian," "Smith," "The Mentalist") and they're doing it with O'Loughlin, who previously starred in "Moonlight" and "Three Rivers" and is now working on a remake of "Hawaii Five-O." The pilot is in production now and if CBS picks it up, the series could land on the fall schedule.

Daniel Dae Kim (Lost) and Alex O'Loughlin (Three Rivers) have begun working on the pilot for CBS' Hawaii Five-O remake. The stars were spotted filming a funeral scene for Five-O boss Steve McGarrett's father on location at the National Cemetery of the Pacific on Oahu, Hawaii (O'Loughlin takes over the iconic role originated by Jack Lord). The scene also featured Taryn Manning as McGarrett's sister, Mary Ann.

'Five-0' meets Mighty Mo
By William Cole- Advertiser Columnist
Pearl Harbor should have a familiar feel for "Hawaii Five-0" cop Steve McGarrett — he was a naval intelligence officer in his fictional past — and the base already is getting its share of closeups in the pilot for the planned remake of the television series.

On Monday, CBS filmed for more than 12 hours at the Battleship Missouri Memorial, starting with Hawaiian blessing. The crew came back again on Tuesday, officials said.

McGarrett (actor Alex O'Loughlin) and Hawai'i Gov. Pat Jameson (Jean Smart) took a stroll on the pier next to the Mighty Mo. Although Missouri folks aren't exactly clear on the script, they said CBS was looking for iconic backdrops such as the big ship.

Scenes also were shot in the USS Missouri's Pearl Canteen and in a back storage area. Along with McGarrett and the "governor," also there were Daniel Dae Kim, cast as detective Chin Ho Kelly, and Scott Caan, who is "Book him, Danno" Danny Williams, officials said.

On Tuesday, the detective drama filmed on the Pearl Harbor destroyer USS Chafee.
Between the Chafee and the Missouri, about 150 people were involved, said Navy spokesman Chief Bart Bauer. That included about 20 to 30 military people as extras.

"They used them for everything from military roles to tourists to security guards," Bauer said.

The military personnel had to be on leave, and they were paid "whatever the extra going rate is — around 100 bucks, I believe," he said.
There is the possibility that some filming will be done on the Ford Island bridge on Saturday, he said.

The Air Force was scheduled to get in on the act later this month, but a big inspection put the kabosh on the date.

Master Sgt. Jennifer Isom, a 15th Airlift Wing spokeswoman, said the plan was to have McGarrett in a scene with a C-17 cargo plane.

"The one scene that was going to take place here was them filming this bit with him coming up to the cockpit, and then they thought, 'Well, no, maybe we'll make him walk up to a C-17,' and then that changed, but basically, it involved a C-17," Isom said.

There was even a casting call for pilots.

Isom said about 14 C-17 pilots showed up. Apparently, they didn't have the right stuff, though.

"Afterwards, they told us they were going to use some actors," Isom said. But then the Hickam shoot was scrapped altogether.

Hawaii 5-0MG! – William plays Alex O’Laughlin’s dad
By Lena • Mar 14th, 2010

Da Big Boss William Sadler informed his fans at the Bill Board about the latest casting scoop.

He wrote:
I know it’s hard to keep track of your Uncle Billy so here’s a quick update. I was just cast in the pilot of the new Hawaii 5-0. Yay! Now before you get your “book ‘em Danno”s in a bunch, I play Alex O’Laughlin’s dad. Not his “just-out-of-prison” uncle like I did in “Three Rivers”. He’s the new McGarrett. I won’t give away the exciting plot twists of this cool new version of that old fav, but I’m in Hawaii right now doing fittings and getting ready to shoot on Monday. Their picking me up at 6:00AM.

See?!! My friends on this board get all the inside poop faster than anyone else on the inter-web. When it comes to poop, no one gets it out faster.
Love,
Bill

Pilots A to Z: CBS is on the case ... again
By Rick Porter
March 14, 2010 7:47 PM ET

The joke about CBS is that it might as well stand for Crimes Being Solved. Every night of the week on the network, bad guys are brought to justice by cops, crime labs, psychics, fake psychics and profilers. Occasionally even the "Ghost Whisperer" helps turn the wheels of justice.

Then again, it's hard to argue with success. CBS is enjoying another solid season in the ratings, and the past few times the network tried going way off-brand with dramas, well, we got "The Ex List," "Viva Laughlin" and "Swingtown" (though the latter, we maintain, was underrated).

So on the drama front this year, you can expect to see more of the same. As for comedies, CBS has become the home for well-crafted multi-camera sitcoms, and it's going almost exclusively with that format in its development this year.

Here's a look at some of the projects that have caught our eye.

"Hawaii Five-O"

At this early stage, the "Five-O" remake feels like as good a bet as any show in development to make the fall schedule. It stars CBS fixture Alex O'Loughlin as Detective Steve McGarrett and also features Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park and Jean Smart (who's a guest star) as the governor of Hawaii). That cast plus a hot writing team (Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci of "Fringe" and "Star Trek," plus "CSI: NY's" Peter Lenkov) should equal a pickup.

Fused TV: Top 10 TV Pilots We Are Looking Forward To for 2010-2011
By Kevin Coll • March 15, 2010

Top 10 Television Pilots to Look Out for in 2010-2011

We are nearing the end of this year’s television season in the next couple of months and I am sure many are looking forward to what the studios will be rolling out for the 2010-2011 season for new shows. We already have a general idea of whats going to return on the primetime and cable fronts but will be premiere with the staple shows? What are the top 10 shows you should be on the look out for 2010-2011?

Well we are here to tell you that very thing with the Top 10 TV pilots we are looking forward too next season. There is a lot to choose from ranging from a new JJ Abrams series to a couple of buddy cop shows on different networks, dramas, procedurals, mysteries, etc. One thing is for sure nothing seems good enough to replace Lost as the most compelling TV show, which makes me sad as the Final Season moves closer.

10 – Mike and Molly (CBS – Comedy)

From the comedic mind of Chuck Lorre, the current king of comedy, with two hit comedies on Monday nights for CBS (Two and Half Men, The Big Bang Theory), its hard not to get excited for his next comedy, in fact, we debated on ranking this higher on our list. The pilot centers on a couple that overeats. The title role of Mike is going to comedic actor Billy Gardell, who was on My Name is Earl for awhile, his character Mike, is a hefty police officer who meets the girl of his dreams at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting. The role of Molly has yet to be cast yet. Swoosie Kurtz will be in the pilot as well playing the role of Joyce, mother to Molly.

9 – Chaos (CBS – Drama/Action)

I found this pilot interesting. The series stars Freddy Rodriguez who is part of a Ragtag group of CIA operatives ensnared by backstabbing and beaucratic snafus. I like the premise a lot. The issue with this show that almost kept it off the list is that it is being developed by Brett Ratner, who I loathe. Rodriguez will play a dedicated and naive agent, Rick Rodriguez, who leads the team and believes he can make the world a better place. Tim Blake Nelson (“The Incredible Hunk”) will play a trained psychologist-turned-Core Collector at the CIA who leads the ODS (Office of Disruptive Services) team. He is a tactical genius and can’t understand why Rick was chosen for the team. Eric Close has also been cast in the series as well, he was recently on Without A Trace. James Murphy and Carmen Ejogo will also star.

8 – Generation Y (ABC – Drama)

This is a show I really thought was cool when I read the premise. The show is a documentary-style dramedy that tracks a group of former high school classmates over the last decade. CBS, tried a comedy version called The Class, which was kinda cool, but this definitely sounds a lot more intriguing. Especially is you get the right cast. Currently is has a cast that consists of Michael Stahl David, Keir O’Donnell, Kelli Gamer, Daniella Alonso, Julian Morris, Mechad Brooks, Jamie King and Anne Son.

7 – The Good Guys (Fox – Action/Comedy)

The Good Guys - Fox's New Buddy Cop Show with Bradley Cooper and Colin Hanks from creator Matt Nix
This show will be premiering in the summer so it probably shouldn’t be on the list but we thought it was worth noting anyway. The show stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks who are buddy cops. Jack (Hanks), is an ambitious, by-the-book detective whose habit of undermining himself has resulted in a dead-end position at the LAPD. His partner Dan (Whitford), a drunken, lecherous cop hangs onto his job only because of a heroic act years before. The show was created by Burn Notice creator, Matt Nix so we have high expectations for it, not to mention the cast is pretty good.

6 – Sh*t My Dad Says (CBS – Comedy)

This is a show that we would have put higher too but when you see the rest of the shows to follow, you may agree this a good spot for it. Inspired and based off the popular Twitter account of the same name, even co-created by its owner, Justin Halpern. The show stars William Shatner who is aging and lives with his young 29 year old son. Shatner will likely have comic sage advice to give much like the Twitter dad while providing other comic avenues of which the show will likely explore. Mad TV alums Will Sasso and Nicole Sullivan also star in series as well with Ryan Devlin in role of the son.

5 – The Rockford Files (NBC – Drama/Procedural)

A remake of the classic and culturally famed series of the same name that starred James Garner, this series has been on our radar for awhile. What makes it one to look out for is the classic nature of the series but also the fact one of our favorite actors in it, Alan Tudyk. The title role is being played by Dermott Mulroney, who is Jim Rockford, a maverick private detective that does anything to get the job done but lives on a shoestring budget. The new series is being developed by House creator, Danny Shore, which is why we also have high expectations for it.

4 – The Cape (NBC – Drama)

Another NBC series, this one is intriguing but deals with one our favorite things, superheroes or rather a costumed hero. Sort of Blankman meets Kick-@ss!, the series follows an ex-cop, who dons a costume persona to fight crime and clear his name after being set-up. Along the way a curious blogger joins him and she’s not afraid to kick a little @ss her self. The series stars David Lyons and Summer Glau.

3 – No Ordinary Family (ABC – Action/Drama)

A proper follow-up to #4, this series follows more superhero than hero. Starring Michael Chiklis, who is no stranger to the superhero realm once playing The Thing in the Fantastic Four, he is the head of a slightly unordinary family, because they are in fact superheroes. The show is being developed by Greg Berlanti (co-wrote The Green Lantern), the film also stars Autumn Reeser, Romany Malco, Jimmy Bennett, Kay Panabaker and Christina Chang. We simply can’t wait for this series which lets face it is a live action version on The Incredibles, naturally fitting well on ABC.

2 – Hawaii Five-O (CBS -Drama/Procedural)

We have been all over this series, which like # 5, is also a remake of cultural staple series of the same name. A classic theme song that is unmistakable this remake will feature a really awesome cast. Alex o’Loughlin, who is getting his third CBS series in 5 years, will play the title role, once played by Jack Lord, known as Steve McGarrett, the head of the Hawaii state police who must deal with border issues, terrorists, etc. Scott Caan, will play his partner, once played by James MacAthur, known as Danno Williams. He will be a New Jersey cop in this version, who has recently undergone an acrimonious divorce and has transferred to Hawaii to be near his 7-year-old daughter. Forced to partner with McGarrett, Danno is initially leery of their association — but as he grows more familiar with his maverick new boss, he begins to appreciate the opportunity to work with McGarrett. Other cast members include Daniel Dae Kim (Lost’s Jin) and Taryn Manning. Action director, Len Wiseman, is set to direct the pilot episode too. The new series has a lot of muscle behind too with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci producing while also developing the series with CSI: NY creator Peter Lenkov. All three wrote the pilot episode.

1 – Undercovers (NBC – Drama/Action)

I do not think it is a shock that this series was our top pick for this article considering the man behind. JJ Abrams brings another show to the weekly fold which means its going to be something worth watching. Returning back to the genre that earned him acclaim, Abrams has creatively combined Mr. and Mrs. Smith with the Bourne Identity for a high adrenaline, spy series. Abrams plans to direct the pilot as well and executive produce on top of his feature film duties, which shows how committed he is to the project. Undercovers, revolves around a domesticated husband (Boris Kodjoe) and wife (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) who return from years in retirement to be re-activated as CIA agents. As they work together for the first time on new cases, they discover new aspects from their past – even as they re-ignite their passion for each other. You can be sure with Abrams the style of the series will be top notch and that it will have something that is most intriguing as well as D*mn good writing.

Pilots A to Z: CBS is on the case ... again

"Criminal Minds" spinoff

Speaking of safe bets: CBS is following the "NCIS" spinoff playbook here, with the new team -- headed by Oscar winner Forest Whitaker -- being introduced in an episode of "Criminal Minds" in April. If it makes the schedule, though, it might be a little less likely to be paired with its parent since CBS is good at 10 o'clock with "CSI: NY."

"Chaos"

The description of this show -- a group of CIA agents work around government bureaucracy to get things done -- doesn't thrill. The cast, however, is pretty darn intriguing: Freddy Rodriguez, "Without a Trace" alum Eric Close, Carmen Ejogo ("Kidnapped"), Tim Blake Nelson and Stephen Rea? That's worth a look.

"Quinn-tuplets"

This drama veers the farthest away from the typical CBS fare, and its order is only for a 20-minute presentation at this point. But we like the premise -- following the adult lives of quintuplets (named Quinn) whose childhoods were documented on TV -- and the cast, which includes Amber Tamblyn, Anna Chlumsky and "Smallville" vet Sam Witwer.

"Livin' on a Prayer"

Think of it as "How I Met Your Mother 2: Slightly More Grown-Up." "HIMYM" creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas and writers Kourtney Kang and Joe Kelly (and director Pam Fryman) are teaming for a comedy about a couple thinking about making the leap in their relationship. The likable Kyle Bornheimer is the male lead.

"Hitched"

"Chuck" co-creator Josh Schwartz and writer-producer Matt Miller created this show about a couple that gets married before they really know one another and the complications that causes for both them and their families. Recent "Chuck" guest star Kristin Kreuk and Jack Carpenter ("I Love You Beth Cooper") are playing the newlyweds.

"S*** My Dad Says"

"The first-ever network sitcom based on a Twitter account" sounds like a recipe for disaster, no matter how funny the actual Twitter account is (and it is highly amusing). Having William Shatner as the dad in question, though (and "Cougar Town's" Ryan Devlin as his son) makes us at least curious to see how it turns out.

“Hawaii Five-O” Finds A Nemisis In James Marsters
According to James Marsters’ official Facebook page, the once blood thirsty actor (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) has been tapped to play Jack McGarrett’s reoccurring arch-nemesis in CBS’ Hawaii Five-O pilot and is currently on his way to Oahu to begin filming.

Exclusive Scoop: Aloha fans! James is winging his way to Hawaii to join the cast of CBS’s HAWAII FIVE-O Pilot. He will be guesting as the nemesis of lead character Jack McGarrett.

Despite fans of the original series remembering Red Chinese intelligence officer Wo Fat as McGarrett’s arch-nemesis in the pilot, finale and series as a whole, the role of Fat has been re-imagined for the TV remake and is now an international arms dealer and human trafficker by the name of Victor Hesse.

The trend of re-imagining roles is not a new one with the remake of Hawaii Five-O. While Alex O’Loughlin and Lost’s Daniel Dae Kim have been cast as the familiar Steve McGarrett and Chin Ho Kelly, the role of Kono Kalakaua, originally male, has been changed to a female for the current incarnation and will be played by former Battlestar Galactica actress, Grace Park.

Since leaving the world of Joss Whedon in 2004, Marsters has been a guest star in Torchwood, Smallville, Numb3rs, Lie to Me, and most recently Caprica (please don’t bring up Dragonball: Evolution) and has always provided memorable appearances on each show.
Considering that many people reference Hawaii Five-O as one of the best police shows ever made – and that Fringe writers Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci are the ones behind the remake – I should be extremely excited to see it. Yet, I’m not. For some reason I’m not even remotely interested in this series.

Although, I have to admit, James Marsters as the nemesis has me intrigued enough to tune in…

What do you think of James Marsters as a nemesis? Are you excited for the new series or, like me, do you need more convincing?
Catch the series premiere of Hawaii Five-O this fall on CBS. (This person is assuming that it will be picked up).

The combination of actors is just amazing! I have such a good feeling about H5O which I did not have with Three Rivers. (Don't get me wrong, I liked Three Rivers, but the chemistry among actors was not there). What is also weird, you have two actors who have played vampires and a director (Len Wiseman) who did all the Underworld films.

Yes I liked Three Rivers, the stories really intrigued me but I do agree there wasn't a ton of chemistry with the actors....would have been nice to see more of Alex's character's back story -- that was getting good. Anywho....getting very excited about H5O even though, initally I wasn't.

I still say CSB should have been a ground breaker and tried to bring back Moonlight with the originals -- HAHA -- R-I-G-H-T

I think that CBS is determined to make this show work and it will (in my opinion). Yes, I will forever mourn Moonlight and wish for closure in Three Rivers. (Hopefully, a DVD is done with the four remaining episodes).

Can Hawaii Five-O not succeed?

The cast of Hawaii Five-O consists of Alex O'Loughlin, Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park, Jean Smart, and Scott Caan. James Marsters is slated to guest star in the pilot. Clearly, CBS is throwing in the big bucks to make the show work.

A remake of a crime procedural on a crime procedural-heavy network sounds boring, but the prospects are good for the show. With a plethora of lead-ins, Hawaii Five-O could take any number of slots following an audience that already likes the genre.

We don't yet how good the writing will be, but Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are producing the show, so they have the credentials to back up the show. There's so much going for the show I can imagine the show not becoming successful.

Eh, we shall see. Nothing is a given these days. Fans are fickle and so are the network execs. I hope it is a huge success but I'm not betting the farm on it. Sorry...

I am telling you that this show will make it big! I have great instinct. (It better be this way).
