Michael Jackson, 'King of Pop,' dead at 50

LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson, the "King of Pop" who reigned over the music world like no other, died Thursday as he prepared for a comeback bid to vanquish nightmare years of sexual scandal and financial calamity. He was 50.

Jackson died at UCLA Medical Center after being stricken at his rented home in Holmby Hills. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at his home for nearly three-quarters of an hour, then rushed him to the hospital, where doctors continued to work on him.

"It is believed he suffered cardiac arrest in his home. However, the cause of his death is unknown until results of the autopsy are known," his brother Jermaine said. Police said they were investigating, standard procedure in high-profile cases.

Jackson's death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

At the time of his death, Jackson was rehearsing hard for what was to be his greatest comeback: He was scheduled for an unprecedented 50 shows at a London arena, with the first set for July 13.

I heard this news over the radio while at work, I'm not even a huge fan of Michael but I was shocked when I heard he died. I actually got chills hearing it over the radio. He was a music icon, it's just very shocking to hear he is gone. It's sad that he was never able to make the comeback like he planned.

I was a child of the 80's so I can remember sitting around the TV with friends waiting for the premiere of the Thriller video and being blown away by it. No matter the oddities and accusations later in his life; it cannot be denied what a musical visionary and amazing talent he was. He seemed like such a tortured soul so hopefully he is at peace now. We will never know the future music that was lost yesterday....and that is tragic.

Mostly, it is so sad that three children have lost the only parent they ever knew and a family lost a brother & son.

Well said Drea. I agree with you on everything you said. My sympathy goes out to his family, friends, and to his fans that have lost a music legend, a father, a son, and a brother.

May he Rest in Peace.
I can still remember watching the Thriller video when I was little and being TERRIFIED! ( I hate Movie/TV/ Dead People) ..
And YaY Billie Jean. I would try and try to copy his dancing for that song. Remember Motown 25 .. PERFECTION..

My prays go out to his children, his family, and his friends.

Yes, very well said Drea! Michael Jackson, despite his eccentricities in later life, broke the mold when it came to pushing or even creating the limits of dance and music. He was admired by many of our current performers for his vision, style and above all talent and will be greatly missed. I hope that many of our younger generation now have a chance to discover his great works. I think fame and insecurity drove Michael to a scary place in later years and it always made me sad. He seemed so lost and some of his desperation may have led him to do some very sad and horrible things. I hope that he, the children and family he leaves behind and those who may have been negatively affected by his actions of the past all find peace!

Back when Michael Jackson first burst on the scene with his brother's group, I was a young lady just beginning my career as a disc jockey. Even though I was young, I was still savvy enough in the business to recognize a phenomenal voice and musical presence when I heard it. I told everyone I knew what a talent Michael was and I knew he would have a great future in the music business.

Famous understatement!

Drea, you made very good points in your statement above. I agree with you. What I find most sad is that he was stricken down so young; he still had so much more to give the world in terms of music. The stress of fame, especially on the scale of his, always takes a toll. And I personally feel since he was denied a traditional upbringing, he spent the rest of his life trying to capture his elusive childhood......without knowing how to accomplish that feat.

So much has been written, speculated and ridiculed about Michael over the past few decades and who is to say what's true and what isn't? At this point, does it matter?

The legacy Michael leaves society is his music...and we all benefit from his genius in this area, whether we acknowledge it or not. How many popular artists today were initially influenced by him? What trends in currant music can trace their roots back to Michael's vision?

Whether you love him, hate him or are totally ambivalent to him.....it cannot be denied his musical talent and contribution to the industry was legendary. I believe the term icon is being mentioned. Considering his global influence, I would have to agree with that term.

May his children and family find solace and peace during this trying time. Having suffered a similar loss recently, I am especially aware of the difficult days they have ahead of them.

I offer the same condolences to Farrah's family too. This type of loss is life-changing and they all deserve our prayers and sympathy.
