Here I continue my geekish quest to understand the mythology behind this awesome show. Today's lesson is on Enochian Sigils - you know those really cool symbols that Castiel CARVED into Dean and Sam's ribs, sternum and clavicles! First of all ouch! Secondly, they're real and can be translated! Before I go there let's step back a bit... A sigil is a sign or symbol. And Enochian is the language of God and the Angels. As Wiki says: "Enochian is a name often applied to an occult or angelic language recorded in the private journals of Dr. John Dee and his seer Edward Kelley in the late 16th century. The men claimed that it was revealed to them by angels, while some contemporary scholars of magick consider it a constructed language. Dee's journals did not describe the language as "Enochian," instead preferring descriptors like "Angelical", the "Celestial Speech", the "Language of Angels", the "First Language of God-Christ," the "Holy Language," or "Adamical" because, according to Dee's Angels, it was used by Adam in Paradise to name all things. The term "Enochian" comes from Dee's assertion that the Biblical Patriarch Enoch had been the last human (before Dee and Kelley) to know the language." Here's what Enochian looks like: and here's the XRay of Dean's chest: Still curious? Well check out Wiki here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enochian or check out this site where a devoted SPN fan has attempted to translate what she read (backwards mind you) on Dean's XRay! Unbelievable! http://community.livejournal.com/supern ... 91062.html My next areas of investigation are the rest of the Horsemen and the shooting star/wormwood references. If you come across something that you'd like me to dig into please send me a PM and I'll do my best to come up with an answer for ya.

A few tidbits that I've dug up in preparation for tonight's and future episodes. The true meaning of the word Apocalypse is to unveil or reveal - not a devastating event or the end of the world as it has become known as. In last week's epi we were told that Rufus followed a sign to Colorado. That sign was the falling star named Wormwood that supposedly poisoned the water. According to Revelation - Wormwood is one of the seven trumpets (which believe it or not are worse than the seals and are also known as the plagues of man) which are fire, blood, hail, light, locusts, the demonic calvalry and the beginning of the end. Revelation reads: "The third angel blew his trumpet and a great star fell from heaven blazing like a torch, and it fell on a 1/3rd of the rivers and springs. The name of the star is Wormwood, and many died from the water as it was made bitter..." Wormwood is also the name of an herb with magical properties. In last week's epi we were also introduced to one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, War. The Four Horsemen symbolize different types of strife and have been described as: 1) False Messiah - Rides a white horse, holds a bow, wears a crown and rides out as a conquerer bent on a conquest. 2) War - Rides out on a fiery red horse, carries a large sword and is given the power to make war. The red represents blood and bloodshed. 3) Famine - Rides a black horse, carries a pair of scales (similar to the scales of justice) and denotes the scarcity of goods/food. 4) Death - Rides a pale horse (often depicted as pale green) and the color of the horse is said to represent the sickly, deathly greenish color. That's all I got for now folks! Odie, I'm still working on Dean's amulet but am beginning to think that is a figment of Kripke's imagination! Stay posted!

In my quest to understand the back story of Season 5 of SPN and for no other reason (especially not to promote or expound on any one religion) I continue my research into some of the pivotal characters of this season. In other words... this is purely for information folks and to satisfy my own geeky curiosity. Introducing Archangel Raphael (Not the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle) one of the seven Archangels of the Bible. Please note that this description is cobbled together from many different sources, which I'd be happy to share if you'd like. Supposedly Raphael was the only one of the Archangels that spent a significant time on Earth and his story can be found in the Book of Tobit. Raphael is also written to have bound Azazel *(sound familiar? See below) under a desert called Dudael according to Enoch 10:5-7: " And again the Lord said to Raphael: 'Bind Azazel hand and foot, and cast him into the darkness: and make an opening in the desert, which is in Dudael, and cast him therein. And place upon him rough and jagged rocks, and cover him with darkness, and let him abide there for ever, and cover his face that he may not see light. And on the day of the great judgement he shall be cast into the fire."*Azazel is represented in the Book of Enoch as the leader of the rebellious giants in the time preceding the flood; he taught men the art of warfare, of making swords, knives, shields, and coats of (chain)mail (armor), and women the art of deception by ornamenting the body, dyeing the hair, and painting the face and the eyebrows, and also revealed to the people the secrets of witchcraft and corrupted their manners, leading them into wickedness and impurity. It seems that Kripke's version of Gabriel differs quite strongly from the Bible's but we know very little about this character so far except that Castiel aims to make him his "little B*tch!" Here's Raphael who looks very different than his earth-bound vessel on SPN. Raphael (Standard Hebrew רָפָאֵל, Rāpāʾēl, means "It is God who heals", "God Heals", "God, Please Heal", Arabic: رافائيل, Rāfāʾīl) is the name of an archangel of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, who performs all manner of healing. The root of the name Raphael also appears in the modern Hebrew word Rophe meaning doctor of medicine, thus echoing the healing function traditionally attributed to this angel. Attributes of his portrait include: The Archangel holding a bottle or flask; Archangel walking with Tobias; Archangel or young man carrying a fish; young man carrying a staff Patronage: apothecaries; blind people; bodily ills; druggists; archdiocese of Dubuque, Iowa; eye problems; guardian angels; happy meetings; insanity; lovers; mental illness; nightmares, nurses; pharmacists; physicians; archdiocese of Seattle, Washington; shepherds; sick people; travelers; young people Raphael in Milton's Paradise Lost The angel Raphael, as well as many other prominent angels appear in John Milton's Paradise Lost, in which he is assigned by God to re-warn Adam concerning the sin of eating of the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil. He also expounds to Adam the war in heaven in which the Archangel Lucifer fell and became Satan, and the creation of the Earth. Some scholars believe the angel was used as a form of self-insertion by Milton.

This may be "nerdy" but it's AWESOME! I've always loved researching mythology and the like to do with the show, and it's incredible how much you find out. This is really kickass, you can really admire the show in a whole light after it dawns on you how much work is put into it!
