Greetings from Wishville! Since tonight's episode was based on wishes and a wishing well I thought I'd look into why dropping a coin into a well to make a wish is so ingrained in our culture. Below is the best description I could find - courtesy of Wikipedia! Enjoy! A wishing well is a term from European folklore to describe wells where it was thought that any spoken wish would be granted. The idea that a wish would be granted came from the idea that water housed deities or had been placed there as a gift from the gods, since water was a source of life and often a scarce commodity. The Germanic and Celtic peoples considered springs and wells sacred places. Sometimes the places were marked with wooden statues possibly of the god associated with the pool. Germanic peoples were known to throw the armour and weapons of defeated enemies into bogs and other pools of water as offerings to their gods. Water was seen to have healing powers and therefore wells became popular with many people drinking, bathing or just simply wishing over it. People believe that the guardians or dwellers of the well would grant them their wish if they paid a price. After uttering the wish, one would generally drop coins in the well. That wish would then be granted by the guardian or dweller, based upon how the coin would land at the bottom of the well. If the coin were to land 'heads-up,' the wish would be granted. If the coin landed 'heads-down,' the wish would not be granted. The tradition of dropping pennies in ponds and fountains stems from this. Coins would be placed there as gifts for the deity to show appreciation. I never knew that if your coin ended up wrongside up that it was bad luck! Even the "teacher" learned something from this. Now if I could just find a well and make all of my Dean dreams come true!

Well I always knew that you weren't supposed to be a coin up if it was tails up because it was bad luck so it would make sense. All I know is I'm not jumping in the well to see which way it was facing. ::Note to self:: Just don't throw any coins in a wishing well.
Thank you very much for this Flo. I love this new section, you manage it so well too. Would have never thought to look into the wishing well and what a fun thing to learn too. Thanks!

Hi All - I know it's been a while since I've posted on the myths and meanings behind some of the Supernatural stories and I truly hope to get back to doing this on a regular basis sometime soon. In the meantime, while adding some "scoop" on the remaining Season 4 episodes I came across the title of the April 30th episode - "The Rapture" and thought that I'd post the theological definition of it so that everyone is on the same page. The Rapture or the The Second Coming of Christ:
The Second Coming of Christ will occur in stages. First, He will remove all Christians from the Earth, to protect them. This is called "The Rapture." The term comes from the Latin verb raptare, and the Greek word harpizo, both meaning "to be caught up" or "to be snatched up." Jesus will "snatch us" out of harm's way.
After The Rapture, God will begin executing judgments against unbelievers, during a period called the Tribulation. At the end of the Tribulation all nations will attack Israel, and Jesus Christ will physically return, leading the armies of heaven. At the Battle of Armeggedon they will destroy everyone who is not a believer. Then Satan will be bound, and Jesus will set up the Millennial Kingdom, headquartered in Jerusalem. Jesus and the saints will rule over the nations of the Earth for a thousand years. During this period there will be people born who are not loyal to Christ. However, it usually will not be obvious. Therefore, at the end of the thousand-year period, God will release Satan and let him tempt those who inhabit the Earth. A large group will take up arms against the Lord and be defeated. Then, Christ will judge all who have ever lived, giving rewards to some and punishment to others. Those who were "destroyed" will be cast into the Lake of Fire, i.e., Hell. After that, God will destroy heaven and Earth because they have been polluted by sin. He will create a new heaven and a new Earth, put those who were saved on the new Earth, and rule it forever.I am now officially scared witless at what Kripke & Company could do with this theory/belief! Buckle up folks I think it's going to be a wild and crazy ride...
