'Moonlight' star joins Daniel Dae Kim in CBS' remake

Alex O'Loughlin is the new Detective Steve McGarrett.

The "Moonlight" star has closed a deal to topline CBS' "Hawaii Five-0" remake.

He will play the role of the head of the Hawaii State Police portrayed by Jack Lord in the original series.

O'Loughlin, who was an early favorite for the part, joins recently cast "Lost" co-star Daniel Dae Kim, who will play Detective Chin Ho Kelly.

The new "Hawaii Five-0" hails from hot feature writers and "Fringe" co-creators Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and "CSI: NY" executive producer/co-showrunner Peter Lenkov. CBS Studios is producing.

"Hawaii Five-0" marks O'Loughlin's third starring vehicle at CBS, following "Moonlight" and this season's medical drama "Three Rivers."

CBS brass certainly hope that the third time will be the charm for O'Loughlin the way it was for another network favorite, Simon Baker, who starred in CBS' short-lived drama series "The Guardian" and "Smith" before headlining hit "The Mentalist."

CBS has successfully persuaded Alex O’Loughlin to headline its in-the-works remake of Hawaii Five-0, sources confirm.

O’Loughlin will play Det. Steve McGarrett, the role originated by Jack Lord.

This marks CBS’ third partnership with the in-demand actor. Their previous efforts, Moonlight and Three Rivers, both ended after one season.

Earlier this week, Lost’s Daniel Dae Kim was tapped to join the Hawaii cast in the role of state police officer Chin Ho Kelly.

The update is being shepherded by Fringe writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, as well as CSI: NY e.p. Peter Lenkov.

Thoughts? Will the third time be the charm for CBS and O’Loughlin?

Still not sure how I feel this particular project for Alex but I will take him in any form we can get....keeping thinking hmmm...Alex, Hawaii, beaches.....shirtless and let's hope we see the real tats! A girl can dream right?!?!

CBS is hoping the third time will be the charm for Alex O’Loughlin.
The “Moonlight” and “Three Rivers” star will take the lead role in the network’s “Hawaii Five-O” remake, which will be his third project at CBS in the past four seasons. He’ll take on the role of Detective Steve McGarrett made famous by Jack Lord in the 1968-80 original, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

O’Loughlin had been in talks to headline the remake for a while prior to signing his deal. He joins “Lost’s” Daniel Dae Kim, who will play fellow Detective Chin Ho Kelly, in the cast. (Anyone want to take bets on whether those two will have a shirtless surfing scene in the pilot?)

The “Five-O” remake comes from Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (”Fringe,” Star Trek”) and Peter Lenkov (”CSI: NY”).

Even Happier New Year!

Ok, my thanks to whoever is doing all that praying or whatever on my behalf because it's been working! After being ignored for the decorator job on a surf film about Bethany Hamilton and then turning down a 2 week job as their shopper buyer, I was asked to be the art director for a national Capital One ("What's in your wallet?") commercial with those wild and crazy visigoths. You'll probably be seeing the commercial in a few weeks. I worked 11 days, hired 9 guys, filmed 2 long days for 30 seconds of air time. We were based out of the same hotel as the surf movie and even another Capital One commercial for the Canadian market. It was a completely separate commercial and crew but for the same client. It's funny that several of them said how spoiled TV people were because commercials are so fast paced now. Then TV people think film people are spoiled because TV is so fast paced. Film people think TV people are spoiled because they don't have to worry about all the details of "The Big Screen." My take is to just shut up and do my job.

Right now besides "LOST" there is a George Clooney film, an Adam Sandler film, the surf film, and early rumblings from "Pirates of the Caribbean" filming here this summer and my phone wasn't ringing at all. Then 10 days ago I got a call to interview as Set Decorator for a new pilot for CBS's "Hawaii Five-0" Wow, that will teach me not to believe rumors. Lest you think I was a shoe-in because of my experience here, wrong. It wasn't until I was able to show my work online at www.flickr.com/photos/rick_romer/ that I was seriously considered. Then it took some discussion and another meeting before I was offered the job.

This is just the pilot. It has not been pre-sold or picked up yet--or so we are told. However, the script is absolutely amazing and riveting. Remember, I did another 5-0 pilot in '96 or '97 that never even aired (although it probably did help Gary Busey's career on Celebrity Rehab) so I am cautiously optimistic on this one. Daniel Dae Kim is going right from "LOST" into 5-0 as the character Chin Ho Kelley. Well, if they can revive "Hawaii Five-0" can a revival of "Magnum, P.I." be too far behind? There was only a year between the series after all.

I wasn't going to, but I got talked into seeing "avatar" in 3-D imax. I don't often say OMG, but OMG! I was ducking under those palm fronds in front of me during every chase scene. Nothing stayed inside the screen, it was right in front of me. I decided that it wasn't a film at all. It was an event. I came out of the theatre covered in popcorn and wanting to keep my yellow 3-d glasses on for the rest of my life. Go Blue People!

Well, Aloha from the only state that didn't have snowfall this weekend. I do assume there is snow on top of Mauna Kea, though. You have to drive up 14,000 feet to see it instead of outside in your driveway.

Question: What do you think of Alex O'Loughlin and Daniel Dae Kim being signed to reprieve Hawaii Five-O? There are naysayers complaining that CBS is wasting the talent of Alex on a remake of a past series, because they don't think these things ever work, but I'm excited about it. At the risk of dating myself, I remember the original series and I loved it, and being that I'd watch Alex in anything, no matter how bad it was, I'm opting for watching him in something that showcases his talent and I think this is a vehicle that will please his fans. Granted, he's not going to be baring his fangs, but I think it's something he can really get his teeth into. (Ugh, did I really make that pun?) Probably too early to know HOW the show is going to be presented, especially being brought to us by the same people that give us Fringe (and I take that as a PLUS), but I don't think it's too early for an opinion from someone who's been pretty right-on in picking the hits. What do you think? Is it a gamble, or a pretty safe bet that this could finally be one series that'll stay around for a while?—Dorothy

Matt Roush: Lots of variables at play here as to whether the pilot and the show itself will work, but I’m encouraged by the participation of Fringe’s Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (who did a bang-up job refreshing the Star Trek franchise at the movies), and as I said last fall, Alex O’Loughlin’s best shot at CBS stardom will likely be as the centerpiece of a crime procedural, especially something with a bright tone and look that will showcase his charisma better than Three Rivers ever had a chance to. Hawaii and CBS have a long history of success (not just Five-O but Magnum, P.I. as well), and of all the many remakes kicking around out there, this one makes the most sense. Keeping Daniel Dae Kim in Hawaii as part of the ensemble is also smart casting. It’s all a matter of execution, of course, and I’m anxious to hear who they’ll cast as “Dan-O”—(wouldn’t it be interesting if it were a “Danielle?”)—but on paper at least, this one sounds like a hot property.

Question: CBS has a lot of hit shows that have no reason to switch nights or time slots, so do you think that it is likely that the Hawaii Five-0 remake starring Alex O’Loughlin ends up on a Friday or Sunday night if it is picked up? If so, you might as well prepare yourself for people acting stunned and angry that CBS would have the nerve to not move one of their already hit shows to another night. The same goes with the Criminal Minds spin-off. On a related note, is there a standard length for a holding deal like the one that Alex O’Loughlin and other actors have with networks or does it expire if a particular actor or actress has too many failed programs?—Tyler

Matt Roush: Now you’re asking me to get inside the mind of the network scheduler—and before you all start writing in to say that with DVRs, it doesn’t matter when a show airs, it can still matter to a show’s long-term fortunes when and how it’s scheduled (especially on CBS, which is the most old-school network in many ways). With CBS, there’s always a tension between maintaining the successful status quo and trying to shake things up to prepare for the future. (This fall, CBS moving The Mentalist to Thursdays was seen as a relatively bold move, although it made room for the two-hour NCIS block, which looks like they’re playing it safe.) If CBS thinks it has a new hit in Hawaii, the boldest move would be to displace one of the long-running CSI shows to Friday or Sunday (New York would be my bet, but even that might be seen as reckless), although Hawaii may be seen as the perfect “blue sky” show to fill the presumed Friday gap should Numb3rs not return. The challenge at CBS is where to put new shows on a schedule with very few weak spots. Will CBS play the NCIS game with Criminal Minds and air the spinoff alongside the original? (In which case, CSI: NY would need to find new digs, anyway.) Sunday night is still CBS’s biggest problem spot (and not just because of the sports overruns), so I’m betting one of the high-profile newbies ends up there, helped by a ton of promotion.

I also find it very interesting that Matt Roush suggested changing the character of "Dan-o" to Danielle, a possible love interest for Steve McGarrett. I realize Sophia Myles is involved in a top secret job but wouldn't she be great as the character, Danielle. It would be so exciting to see Alex and Sophia together again in a series. If we can't have them as Mick and Beth, they would be great as Danielle and Steve. I can dream, can't I? If keeping with my fantasy, I went over to CBS forum and suggested casting Sophia for the show. If anyone agrees with me, I hope you'll head over and make the same suggestion. It takes just a few minutes to make the request.

Actually, that is a great idea! Ii did cross my mind about Jason Dohring in that role. However, I don't think that CBS want fans to associate Alex with Moonlight. (At least, this is the impression that I get. I could be wrong).

Alex O’Loughlin Will Hang Ten As The Lead, Steve McGarrett, In The New ‘Hawaii 5-0’ TV Show Remake

Don’t you think it’s a totally tubular decision to cast Aussie hottie Alex as the lead when Hawaii gets a reboot this year?

A rep for Alex O’Laughlin confirms to HollywoodLife.com that the actor has landed the plum part of Detective Steve McGarrett when the iconic 70’s TV show gets a modern-day update on CBS this year.
Yippee! We’re stoked to see Alex back in action after his medical drama, Three Rivers, flat-lined in November. Until last week he and Nip/Tuck actor Julian McMahon, 42, were neck and neck for the role.
We’re confident that the Aussie hunk can handle his Hawaii 5-0 role, especially because we know he’s adept at playing super-sleuths. Who can forget his turn as vampire private eye Mick St. John in the short-lived (but utterly engaging) CBS drama Moonlight?

Alex will be joined on the North Shore when filming begins on location in Hawaii, is Lost’s Daniel Dae Kim, 43, in the role of state police officer Chin Ho Kelly and Taryn Manning, 31, as Det. McGarrett’s sister, Mary Ann McGarrett.

And if you can’t wait for the Hawaii pilot to be released, well then, you’ll just have to get your fix when Alex stars as Jennifer Lopez’s love interest in The Back-Up Plan, which hits theaters April 23.

I am sure that he will or the remake! The old one... I don't remember.
