New 'Harry Potter' posters: Love! Jealousy! Betrayal!
Jun 18, 2009, 11:17 AM | by Adam Markovitz

Categories: Harry Potter, Movie Posters

Forget Voldemort's killing spree: The Potterverse is about to get its Melrose Place on judging by these newly-leaked posters for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (out July 15). Just check out the look on Hermione's face as she watches Ron cozy up to Lavender.

Image

And get a load of Harry, all serious and smitten, gearing up for his My Girl moment with Ginny (I know, I know: Macaulay Culkin was about half Harry's age in that movie. There's just something about those glasses...). This one in particular looks like it was made just so Potter fans can go nuts pasting their own heads over Ginny's (feel free to share yours below!).
Image

After the jump, we also get glimpses of Draco, wand in hand, and the kooky Luna Lovegood. But really, from the posters, it looks like the Ron-Hermione-Lavender love triangle --- which gets zero screen time in the trailer --- is going to be front and center in the movie.

Just an FYI I received from my IT Dept.....

MALWARE TO TARGET HARRY POTTER FANS

Can't wait to see "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince"? Thinking about downloading a pirated copy? Think again, as it could contain malware.

Cybercriminals are pushing "blackhat" search engine optimization tactics to target the most popular file sharing and P2P networks, pursuing those interested in upcoming movie releases and in particular taking advantage of the sizeable Harry Potter fan base wanting to download the movie in advance of its screening.

Fans are baited with text like: 'Watch "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" online free'. What appears to be a legitimate looking website then redirects you to a video offer which prompts you to download and install the additional "streamviewer". The streamviewer, however, is installing malware. Suddenly, missing out on a sneak peek is the least of your worries!

Harry Potter & HBP premiered in London last night and a review appears below. I'm really looking forward to this! Flo

Critics laud love-laced Harry Potter film
Wed Jul 8, 2009 6:55am

Mike Collett-White

LONDON (Reuters) - It may have had one of the wettest premieres in memory this week, but that did little to dampen critics' enthusiasm for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", the sixth film in the blockbuster franchise.

British broadsheet newspapers gave Half-Blood Prince solid ratings of three stars out of five, saying that the movie lived up to its predecessors and hit most of the right notes for millions of Potter fans around the world.

The Sun tabloid went further, calling it "the most confident, stylish, individual, warm-hearted and witty Harry Potter yet.

"Instead of 'going darker' again (yawn), Daniel Radcliffe as Harry, Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) go lighter. At times like a High School rom-com."

The film, which hits cinemas on July 15, is based on the novel of the same name by British author J.K. Rowling.

The book series ends with the seventh volume, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", but Hollywood studio Warner Bros has decided to make two films out of the final installment.

Given that the franchise has earned $4.5 billion global ticket sales so far, reviewers are hardly surprised.

"So desperate are the producers not to compromise their revenue stream that the final book, the Deathly Hallows, will be divided into two parts," wrote Andrew Pulver in the Guardian in a generally positive review of Half-Blood Prince.

Sarah Crompton of the Daily Telegraph said: "For fans both of the films and the books, this is an elegant addition to the canon -- even if it is only there to set the scene for the final conflict in the next two movies."

LOVE IN THE AIR

In Half-Blood Prince, Albus Dumbledore, headmaster of the Hogwarts school of magic, grooms Potter for the inevitable final showdown with evil Lord Voldemort, whose presence is constantly felt in color-drained, dark-clouded canvases.

But while menace looms, culminating in the death of a central character, romance blossoms between teenaged wizards, providing for more comedy than some viewers had expected.

Harry has feelings for Ginny, while Ron is caught in a love triangle with the attentions of the over-affectionate Lavender Brown throwing Hermione into a jealous rage.

Alistair Harkness of the Scotsman said in his three-star review that the middle section, concentrating on the characters' love interests, lagged.

"The weightier, emotional stuff the characters are going through often jars with the more comedic elements built around their exploding hormones," he added.

And Wendy Ide of the Times wrote that the romantic awakening, which several reviewers argued was far more innocent that what really goes on between 16- or 17-year-olds, may be more appealing to adult viewers than to children.

"A couple of 12-year-olds at the screening I attended squirmed with agonized embarrassment at the slightest hint of a snog," she wrote.

Half-Blood Prince was directed by David Yates, who also made the fifth film and is in charge of Deathly Hallows Part One and Two. The first of the pair is due for release in November 2010 and the second in the summer of 2011.

Potter" advance tickets outpace "Transformers"

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Advance sales of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" are outpacing those of current box-office champ "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" and of 2007's "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" at a similar point in their sales cycles.

Eight days before its July 15 opening, "Prince" accounted for 65 percent of daily ticket sales, online ticketer Fandango said Tuesday.

Fandango said a poll of more than 3,000 visitors to its Web site found that 85 percent of respondents had read all seven Potter books. "Prince" is the sixth Potter movie of a planned eight; Warner Bros. is splitting the seventh book into two movies.

"'The Half-Blood Prince' is turning out to be one of our fastest-selling titles of the year," Fandango COO Rick Butler said.

Fandango began selling "Prince" tickets June 17.

Hermione casts biggest spell on 'Potter' fans
Tue Jul 14, 2009 3:43pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Harry Potter might be the most famous boy wizard in the world, but it's brainy Hermione Granger who is casting the biggest spell on fans, according to an online poll released on Tuesday.

Hermione emerged as the most popular character in J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series, and Emma Watson, the 19-year-old who plays the schoolgirl, was the actor fans believe will have the best career -- possibly as a sex symbol -- once the eight "Potter" movies have ended.

Actor Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Potter, laughed off suggestions he might be gay, but told AOL's Moviefone website in an interview; "It's always good to keep them guessing."

With "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" about to open in movie theaters round the world, 39 percent of those questioned in the poll at AOL's Moviefone.com and Bebo.com ranked Granger as their favorite character, with Potter coming in next at 29 percent.

Some 51 percent thought Watson would have the best post-Potter career, with a large majority (67 percent) approving the idea of her appearing naked.

Watson has been quoted as saying she would be prepared to strip for a movie -- but only if it was made by Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci.

Radcliffe, who turns 20 years-old next week and who has already bared all in the stage production of "Equus", said he felt for his co-star and the media attention she is now attracting.

"She's always been a very, very pretty girl, and now suddenly that she turned 18, everyone's like 'OK, now she's fair game! Paparazzi!'," Radcliffe told Moviefone.com.

"It is kind of creepy, I did feel bad for her. Men will never know the kind of humiliation of having an upskirt done, which poor old Emma had," he said, referring to pictures of recent "wardrobe malfunctions" by the actress.

Radcliffe said he was aware that he was becoming something of an icon in the gay community. "Some people think I'm gay when I meet them, which I think is awesome. It's always good to keep them guessing," he laughed.

"I don't go on any blogs or chats or anything, but my friends are demons for them, and apparently someone said 'Daniel Radcliffe is gay. He's got a gay face!' I really don't know what a gay face is," Radcliffe said.

"Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" opens in movie theaters on July 15. Radcliffe, Watson and the rest of the cast are currently filming the two movies of the final book "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows", which are due out in late 2010 and 2011.

EW's review of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince! Wow they gave it an A-! I'm shocked and thrilled!
BEWARE there be spoilers within! Flo

Movie Review
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)
Credits
Release Date: Jul 15, 2009; Rated: PG; Genres: Drama, Fantasy; With: Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson

--By Lisa Schwarzbaum
Lisa Schwarzbaum is a film critic for EW
Darkness is visible from the outset of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. The Death Eaters mobilized by the return of Lord Voldemort at the end of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix are on the loose in London, streaking through an anxious metropolis on missions of urban destruction that, in a different fantasy cosmos, might challenge the talents of Batman. Thunder rattles a gray sky; the camera alights on a heavyhearted young man reading his newspaper in a sad subway café out of an old Edward Hopper painting while he ogles a pretty waitress out of modern multiracial England. Yet there's cause for audience spirits to be high: The universally recognizable fellow is Harry Potter, embodied in blossoming manhood by Daniel Radcliffe. The newspaper is The Daily Prophet, that model of innovative print journalism in which every photo not only tells a story, but morphs into a moving picture, too. And it's abundantly clear that director David Yates, returning to the magical realm after Order of the Phoenix, and indispensable Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves (he's written all but the Phoenix script) have perfected a crucial potion: They've found just the right balance of timeless spiritual profundity and contemporary teen specificity, of awe and humor, necessary to steer J.K. Rowling's
enthralling seven-book saga to a satisfying conclusion. Will Hermione (Emma Watson) attract Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint)? Will Ron kiss flouncy, pouncy Lavender Brown (Jessie Cave)? Will Harry connect with Ron's no-longer-such-a-kid sister, Ginny (Bonnie Wright)? And will good triumph over evil? Stick around till Yates and Kloves' final two-part Potter production, scheduled for 2010 and 2011, and find out.

Even loyal readers who enjoy the gift of clairvoyance may appreciate a reminder or two about the plot of Half-Blood Prince. Just before Harry is set to return to Hogwarts, the star student is recruited by venerable headmaster Albus Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) for a mission. The old wizard wants to lure the retired Potions professor Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent, doing a juicy inside-out version of his role
in Topsy-Turvy) back to Hogwarts to find out what the vain old goat remembers about a certain former star student named Tom Riddle. (Long story short for Muggles: Riddle became Voldemort.) In the meantime, Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) is being groomed to do some major evil. And Prof. Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) appears to have Draco's back — as well as the most delicious ability to. clip. his. words.

All the while, the teenage wizards-in-training have enough to handle just being regular teens under the spell of raging hormones. ''Excuse me, I have to go and vomit,'' Hermione announces with a bite worthy of Gossip Girl when she observes Ron getting all snoggy with Lavender, who's one of the great lovestruck steamrollers of teen literature. And anyone who has survived 12th grade has passed a pale individualist classmate like Evanna Lynch's Luna Lovegood in the hallway, or encountered an imperious dragon-lady teacher like Maggie Smith's Minerva McGonagall.

On the other hand, not many teens face a hero's quest as daunting as the one set for Harry, with a showdown scheduled for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Half-Blood Prince encompasses important plot developments involving both love and death. But the story is, still and all, only a pause, deferring an intensely anticipated conclusion. And it's in that exquisite place of action and waiting that this elegantly balanced production emerges as a model adaptation. By now, as played with utmost loyalty to the cause by some of Britain's most illustrious actors, the supporting characters are as familiar as the population of Homer Simpson's neighborhood (and that's a great compliment). Yet with a big assist from cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel — a Potter newbie who memorably shot Amélie and Across the Universe — the filmmakers have found a way to refresh our eyes and enhance our appreciation for this rich, amazing creation.
