I'm so in on this!!! I already have an icon thanks to Candy, I can't start to understand why so many people won't be a donor .... trying to change that is a great and beautiful task!!

I really do love this idea. It's a great thing to promote something we're passionate about and also the be ahead of the game when it comes to Alex's possible new show.

Not only do we like to shine the spotlight on our members here at MVS but we also have a cause that is near and dear to many of our members and mods and that is Organ Donation. National Give Life Month was this past April and even though it has passed we should not forget that there is a great ongoing need for vital organs and organ donors. The statistics are sobering:

There are now more than 100,000 people in the United States waiting for lifesaving organ transplants.
A million more suffer from blindness, medical conditions or devastating injuries that can be successfully
treated with donated corneas or tissue.

Everyone is likely to have a neighbor, a friend or even a family member who has been or will be affected by organ or tissue donation. Last year, more than 28,000 lives were saved through organ transplants. These were necessary because no other medical treatment offered the possibility of recovery from organ failure.

Similarly, tissue transplants are often a necessary part of medical treatment for a multitude of diseases
and injuries, including bone fracture, ligament repair and heart surgery. More than one million life-enhancing tissue transplants are performed each year, offering patients a new chance at healthy, productive and normal lives.

We at MVS urge you to consider checking off the organ donation box the next time you renew your license or go to the donate life website http://www.donatelife.net/CommitToDonation/index.php to find out how you can register in your state. In the meantime please consider adding one of the donate life icons to your signature here at MVS and show your support! If you see one that you like please contact one of the mods and we'll make it happen!

Really nice work Flo. Organ donation is very important and yes, you can save someone's life - You do make a difference.

Thank you Flo for doing such a great write up! It is such an important issue and so easy to just check a box when you renew your license. I would also stress that if you decide to be a donor; please also inform your family. It is important they are aware of your decision/wishes.

On a side, semi-related note, I am also a bone marrow registered donor (I have never been called on) and it did require a tube of blood to be donated. One of my closest girlfriends had been alive b/c some "stranger" was willing to give her this gift almost 15 years ago. I think of all the fun things we have done and times we have been through these last 15 years....years we would not have had without such an amazing gift!!!

What a privilege to know you could help so many...

Here are just some statistics to add to what Flo wrote that I thought were very important to know.

These are from the Donate Life website.

the national organ transplant waiting list.

* An average of 18 people die each day from
the lack of available organs for transplant.

donors and 6,895 living organ donors resulting
in 28,108 organ transplants.

* In 2005, 44,000 grafts were made available for
transplant by eye banks within the United States.

* Approximately 1,000,000 tissue transplants are
performed annually.

* According to research, 98% of all adults have
heard about organ donation and 86% have heard
of tissue donation.

* 90% of Americans say they support donation, but
only 30% know the essential steps to take to be a donor.

(Just more reasons to show how important
Organ Donation is and how YOU could save a life.)

When I turn 21 next May, I plan to check the option to become an organ donor on my license. The promotion of this topic at MVS really opened up my eyes to this idea and showed me how important it is take part in this organization to help people in need of an organ donation.
