SEPTEMBER 2009

This month will be off to a great start with a new addition to the Dark Series by Christine Feehan, I think next to Jeaniene Frost she is my favorite with this series!

Christine Feehan
Dark Slayer (Dark Series/Carpathian Series)
9/1/09

A rumor has persisted in the vampire world of a dark slayer—a woman—who travels with a wolf pack and who destroys any vampire who crosses her path. Mysterious, elusive and seemingly impossible to kill, she is the one hunter who strikes terror into the hearts of the undead. She is Ivory Malinov. Her only brethren, the wolves. Long ago betrayed by her people, abandoned by her family, and cast out by everyone she held dear, Ivory has lived a century without companionship or love. She has sustained her sanity by the habit of the hunt and the custom of the feeding. Until the night she picks up the scent of a man, her unexpected salvation. Her lifemate. The curse of all Carpathian women.
He is Razvan. Branded a criminal, detested and feared, he is a dragonseeker borne of one of the greatest Carpathian lineages, only to be raised as its most despised—and captive—enemy. Fleeing from his lifetime of imprisonment, Razvan now seeks the dawn to end his terrible existence. Instead he has found his deliverance in the Dark Slayer.
In spirit, in flesh and blood, in love, and in war, Ivory and Razvan are made for each other. For as long as they dare to live.

Find out why the giant three-headed dog that guards the gates of Hades has left the underworld for the real world – and whose scent he’s following – in Ilona Andrews’s Magic Mourns. Embark on a perilous search for the kidnapped niece of a powerful vampire alongside her blind – and D*mn sexy – companion and a hellhound in Meljean Brook’s Blind Spot

And now my pick for Odie for this month!

Then there’s Honesty, whose vow of Solace is to a prince looking for a submissive handmaiden. Instead, he gets the unexpected. Witch Craft (Nocturne City, Book 4)
9/1/09

Someone, or something, is setting fire to the homes of the city’s most infamous non-humans, racking up a body count that’s growing by the day. And strange, otherworldly creatures no one has seen before – selkies, trolls and harpies – are causing chaos throughout the city. Racing to stop the carnage, Luna turns to sexy federal agent Will Fagin for help. As they work to uncover the source of the bloodshed, Luna’s attraction for Will deepens. But just as she learns Will’s darkest secret, Nocturne City is thrust into total chaos – leaving Luna and Will in a path of destruction they may not be able to stop…or survive.

A bond about to be tested by a werewolf shape-shifter who wants Mary Ann for his own and a vampire princess Aden can’t resist. Two romances, both forbidden…doomed. We are going to file this under WTF??? But I had to post it, if nothing more than to share the cover art!

Caspian clearly has secrets of his own, but he’s the only person who makes Abbey feel normal again…but also special. The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2 (Anthology)
9/21/09

There are typical vampires who would be right at home in a horror story or a Gothic romance; historical vampires; contemporary, gritty, urban vampires; fang-in-cheek comedy; boy-meets-girl sweetheart stories (if a little bloodier!); and erotic tales of inhuman passions and midnight pleasures. Look out, too, for stand-alone stories relating to existing series and characters of contributing authors, or stories which develop more fully characters who have only walk-on parts in those authors’ longer fiction. Includes writing by big-name authors such as Jennifer Ashley, Kim Harrison writing as Dawn Cook, Caitlin Kittredge, Diane Whiteside and Eileen Wilks.

Devoured
9/22/09

Megan has been haunted by the ghost of her twin sister, Remy, since the accident nine years ago. Megan doesn’t want anyone to think she’s crazy, so she keeps this little “talent” to herself. But when she meets Luke at her summer job and discovers he can see ghosts too, she’s thrilled. Finally, someone who can relate…and, even better, can possibly help Remy move on. Megan’s not even worried about the fact that Luke’s supercute and nice, because of course she’s totally into her boyfriend (even though he’s been spending way too much time with another girl). And she definitely didn’t mean to kiss Luke (especially since her friend has a thing for him). Messy much? But when the visions Remy haunts Megan with get crazy violent, Megan must turn to Luke to figure out what her twin is trying to say. Because someone’s definitely in danger…she’s just not sure who.

On the Edge (The Edge, Book 1)
9/29/09

Rose Drayton lives on the Edge, between the world of the Broken (where people drive cars, shop at Wal-Mart, and magic is a fairy tale) and the Weird (where blueblood aristocrats rule, changelings roam, and the strength of your magic can change your destiny). Only Edgers like Rose can easily travel from one world to the next, but they never truly belong in either. Rose thought if she practised her magic, she could build a better life for herself. But things didn’t turn out how she planned, and now she works a minimum wage, off the books job in the Broken just to survive. Then Declan Camarine, a blueblood noble straight out of the deepest part of the Weird, comes into her life, determined to have her (and her power). But when a terrible danger invades the Edge from the Weird, a flood of creatures hungry for magic, Declan and Rose must work together to destroy them – or they’ll devour the Edge and everyone in it…

Queene of Light (Lightworld/Darkworld, Book 1)
9/29/09

In a time not long from now, the veil between fantasy and reality is ripped asunder – creatures of myth and fairytale spill into the mortal world. Enchanted yet horrified, humans force the magical beings Underground, to colonise the sewers and abandoned subway tunnels beneath their glittering cities. But even magic folk cannot dwell in harmony and soon two Worlds emerge: the Lightworld, home to faeries, dragons and dwarves; and the Darkworld, where vampires, werewolves, angels and demons lurk. Now, in the dank and shadowy place between Lightworld and Darkworld, a transformation is about to begin…Ayla, a half-faery, half-human assassin is stalked by Malachi, a Death Angel tasked with harvesting mortal souls. They clash. Immortality evaporates, forging a bond neither may survive. And in the face of unbridled ambitions and untested loyalties, an ominous prophecy is revealed that will shake the Worlds.

Kelley Armstrong
Frostbitten (Otherworld, Book 10)
9/29/09

Being the world’s only female werewolf has its advantages, such as having her pick of the Otherworld’s most desirable males. And Elena Michaels couldn’t have picked a more dangerously sexy and undyingly loyal mate than Clayton Danvers. Now their bond will be put to the ultimate test as they follow a bloody trail of gruesome slayings deep into Alaska’s frozen wilderness. There’s nothing the werewolf community dislikes more than calling attention to itself. So when a pair of rogue man-eaters begins hunting humans, it’s up to Elena and Clayton to track down the predators. But any illusions their task would be simple are quickly dispelled. For even in werewolf terms, there’s something very disturbing taking place in the dark Alaskan forests. A werewolf more wolf than human and more unnatural than supernatural is on the hunt – a creature whose origins seem to spring from ancient legends of the shape-shifting Wendigo. And if that wasn’t bad enough, Clayton and Elena find themselves confronting painful ghosts from their pasts – and an issue neither of them is eager to discuss. For one of them has been chosen to become the new Pack leader, and as every wolf knows, there can be only one Alpha. They’ve always been equals in everything. Now, when their survival depends more than ever on perfect teamwork, will instinct allow one of them to lead…and the other to follow?

How to Catch and Keep a Vampire

Image

How to Catch and Keep a Vampire is the title of Diana Laurence’s latest book that will be released on October 23.
In How to Catch and Keep a Vampire, Diana Laurence explores the romantic fascination we mortals have for the undead.
Why do perfectly normal people fall for such sinister beings?
And more importantly, what should we do about it when we do?

Diana Laurence knows.

With loads of personal experience to draw upon, Diana does everything from explaining the attraction to blood-drinkers, to sharing what red satin ribbon signifies to them. In this book, she has created a road map to show readers how a vampire relationship can be achieved and conducted in harmony with everyday existence. Diana is here to guide you on this challenging but rewarding journey, as she notes in the Introduction:

I’m not claiming this quest is without its challenges. Having a successful relationship never is. And it’s even tougher when you throw in the special problems of being with a vampire: his ego, the crazy hours, your inability to deny him anything, his natural aversions to garlic and monogamy.

There will be days that being in love with a vampire will seem like, for lack of a better word, a curse. But take heart; I’m here to be your guide, and show you that you do have the wherewithal to balance your vampirophilia with a full, happy, successful life.

By the time we’re done you’ll know all you need to realize your dreams of bringing a real vampire into your life.

Meet some of Diana’s vampires.

Hmmm... that last picture looks like Brad Pitt from his long hair days! Maybe I should be looking for a vampire man instead of a mortal? LOL - thanks for posting this D! ;)

LOL! I thought the exact same thing, Flo. The last picture
looks like the young Brad Pitt. Great minds think alike. :Haha:

Mortal vs Vampire? Ummmm......that's an easy choice.

The book sounds like a fun read, Drea. Thanks.

Now Riley is launching into action, toying with a seductive – and highly suspicious – club owner, and finding herself in the middle of another mystery: women being killed one by one, without a trace of violence. For Riley, solving multiple cases – in a world going mad with human and vampire passions – would have been tough enough. Instead she has two jealous lovers on her hands: Kye Murphy, the amber-eyed werewolf who makes Riley’s wolf blood howl – and Quinn, the cool, elegant vamp who has over a thousand years’ experience at fulfilling women’s desires. While she’s busy juggling these two sexy beasts, Riley’s detective work takes a stunningly violent turn. Finding a murderer is now a matter of life and death. Especially since the killer has long since found her…

'Touched by a Vampire: Discovering the Hidden Messages in the Twilight Saga'

Review by Examiner.com Amanda Bell
Beth Felker Jones’ Touched by a Vampire: Discovering the Hidden Messages in the Twilight Saga was just released yesterday on Amazon. The book promises to examine the Twilight series through a biblical lens, and it makes good on that promise – and perhaps a bit too closely, at times, in all honesty.

Jones treats the Twilight saga as though it is a story of earnest impact upon its readership. One of the assumptions clearly made in Jones’ analysis is that the Twilight series holds for its readership a source of learning about life and about relationships. It is a given to Jones’ analysis that the books are not a merely mode of pure escapism but that they instead carry special weight with regard to their readers’ understanding of life or happiness.

That said, Jones approaches the nuances of the story with fluidity and understanding of the appeal and emotional impact upon the reader.

She begins by recounting, quite nicely in fact, the plot and major events of the four books.
Jones then addresses the logistics and morality in the various books and sequences – with a very strictly Christian ethic. Though she does lend credence to some of the subtleties of modern society in her review, most of the basis of her analysis lies in the relationship (or lack of relationship, it seems, in this case) between the Twilight series’ events and characters and the Christian faith.

Jones is often at odds with some of the protagonist’s viewpoints on life, self, and relationships, and she offers her critique of those aspects against a background of doctrine and scripture.

The book is very fluid and comprehensible. It is also interesting and does raise a great line of inquiry into right and wrong as it exists in the fictional Forks as opposed to the real-life situation of the modern person.

However, there is this innate sense of tearing down the story that comes with Jones’ analysis. In fact, in only one chapter of the book is the analysis completely devoid of criticism. For the thicker-skinned Twilight fans or followers of the Christian faith, there is this comprehensive and all-encompassing line of inquiry offered by Jones' examination.

That’s not to suggest that this book is for everyone – quite the contrary. Jones makes a point, in framing her audience at the outset, to infer that the book is intended for an audience that is both familiar with and agreeable to the Christian teachings. There is no room, quite simply, for disagreement in that regard. That said, for Twilight fans who adhere to the Christian teachings, there is some correspondence and contradiction drawn between the series and what might be presumed to be of Christian virtue (i.e., no pre-marital sex, etc.) and what is in actuality.

In most chapters, Jones re-presents the storyline as it relates to the chapter’s topic (i.e., family relationships or marriage) and then breaks down the plot by contrasting it with the teachings of the Bible – particularly the New Testament.

One passage that illuminates the aim and gist of the book particularly well is as follows:

In the world of the Twilight Saga, good stands up against evil, and people struggle heroically to combat their own worst desires. The universe Meyer has created is, without a doubt, a moral universe, but the rules of goodness in that universe have crucial differences from the way Christians understand goodness and morality to work.

As you can see, the book offers a Christian viewpoint on the issues raised in the Twilight series. In other words, the Twilight series seems almost an avenue of discussion point-making that segues into a discussion of Christian faith – not the other way around.

There is one chapter, as mentioned, that does the contrary. In the chapter wherein Jones is discussing [*spoiler*] the Breaking Dawn transformation of Bella into a vampire, a portion of the series that she admits to be her favorite, she uses the occurrences as a jumping-off point into new teachings. Instead of warning her readers against the dangers of buying into a hope or passion like that of the characters in the Twilight series, Jones uses a more metaphorical and symbolic view of the events to transpire into a discussion about theology. This, perhaps, is the strongest (or at least most convincing) bit of analysis offered in the book.

Overall, the book is quite interesting, and, given that it offers a new framework for reading the series (though the book is not friendly to the Mormon faith, at times), it challenges some of the passions that Twilight readers might have about the books. On the other hand, it is not necessarily for the most avid of Twilight fans as it could be seen as destructive of some of the lighter, more escapist moments in the books

Fascinating - I don't think I'll be adding this one to my reading list but I'd love to hear from anyone who does read it.
